Welcome to The Climb, your weekly journey with Lifecycle Sherpa, where we explore Parkinson’s Disease, its symptoms, treatments, tips, techniques, and build a supportive and knowledgeable community.
This week’s trail leads us to… Sexual Changes.
Question: What is it? Why does it happen? What can I do to manage it?
Answer: More commonly identified in men than women. Examples include erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, difficulty reaching orgasm and decreased genital sensitivity. Less commonly, the opposite reaction has been documented including increased sex drive and sensitivity, which can be linked to medications.
Why does this happen?
This occurs as a result of degeneration of the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system, in addition to motor dysfunction, mood disorders, and medications. Hypersexuality can be a result of impulse control disorders linked to medications.
Tips:
Medication (speak to your doctor for details)
A follow up with a Urologist can be helpful as well.
