Issue #29 Visuospatial Problems

September 18, 2024

Welcome to The Climb, your weekly journey with Lifecycle Sherpa, where we explore Parkinson’s Disease, its symptoms, treatments, tips, techniques, and build a supportive and knowledgeable community.

This week’s trail leads us to… visuospatial problems.

Question: What is it? Why does it happen? What can I do to manage it?

Answer: It is VERY IMPORTANT to address safety with driving skills with those who are experiencing vision changes as they may no longer be safe to drive.

The inability to recognize faces or common objects or to find objects in direct view despite good acuity, inability to operate simple implements, or orient clothing to the body. This is not a problem with the eyes, but actually due to degeneration of cognition (mental processes) and is closely linked to visual and auditory hallucinations).

Tips:

1) Medication (speak to your doctor about details)

2) Follow up with an Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist to discuss safety and compensatory strategies.
