Welcome to The Climb, your weekly journey with Lifecycle Sherpa, where we explore Parkinson’s Disease, its symptoms, treatments, tips, techniques, and build a supportive and knowledgeable community.
This week’s trail leads us to… apathy.
Question: What is it and why does it happen?
Answer: Presents as a lack of interest, enthusiasm, concern, a lack of motivation or initiative. Often, I hear about this symptom less from the patient and more from their loved ones noticing a change.
This occurs as a result of degeneration of the ability to produce dopamine in the brain.
It is very important to note for caregivers and loved ones that this is NOT laziness or lack of love for others. This in an inability to SHOW excitement or love.
Tips to address apathy:
- Medication (speak with your doctor for details)
- Speak to a Psychologist or Neuropsychologist
We always encourage feedback, as it helps us enhance our community. Feel free to reach out regarding future topics you want to learn about, or how we can improve your experience.
See you next week!
