This week’s trail leads us to… Excessive Daytime Sleepiness.

Question: What is it, how is it experienced and why does it happen?

Answer: Falling asleep during daily activities such as while driving, out in public, or even in the middle of a conversation. This is a very common symptoms and may not be noticed by the patient, so a caregiver should give feedback.

This is caused as a result of degeneration of parts of the brain associated with the sleep-wake cycle.

Tips to address Excessive Daytime Sleepiness:

  1. Medication (speak to your doctor about details)
  2. Caffeine
  3. Engage in stimulating environments (that engage many senses)
  4. Exercise regularly
